Planting

Seed planting took place once the farmer's acres were plowed and flattened by the harrow. Planting was originally done by handsowing where laborers would carry seed in aprons or boxes and distribute the seed across the soil by hand.

Eventually broadcast sowing replaced this method. This form of planting used seed barrows as pictured here. These implements were designed during the Victorian days. The wheelbarrow seeder was used to spread seeds of all varieties such as clover, timothy, mullet, alfalfa, red top and orchard grass over large field areas. The bigger seeders were also used to fertilize large areas.
